Judge’s absence stalls Evans trial

The scheduled trial of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike alias Evans, at an Ikeja High Court, was on Monday stalled following the absence of the judge, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that a court official, who pleaded anonymity, Justice Taiwo was on an official assignment with Justice Opeyemi Oke, the Chief Judge of Lagos State.

The case was, however, adjourned until June 16 for a continuation of trial.

Evans is facing trial alongside Victor Aduba on a four-count bordering on kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.

They are accused of kidnapping Mr. Sylvanus Ahamonu, holding him hostage for at least nine weeks and collecting a ransom of 420,000 dollars from his family.

During the last court proceedings on March 14, the videos of Evans confessing to committing crimes of kidnapping and armed robbery within and outside Lagos were shown in court.

Buhari mourns ex-Nigeria’s envoy to Ethiopia, Adegoroye

President Muhammadu Buhari has mourned the passing of a former Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and the nation’s Representative to the African Union, Amb. Victor Adeyeye Adegoroye, who passed on at 93.

In his condolence to the family, President Buhari commiserated with the Ondo State Government, family and friends of the late ambassador, especially those he worked with for many years as a career diplomat.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, in a statement said, President Buhari urged the family to take solace in the fact that the patriarch of the Adegoroye family lived faithfully and served his country dutifully, believing that his contributions to national development will always be remembered and acknowledged by posterity.

President Buhari prayed that God will comfort the family and grant his soul eternal rest.
