Public commentators and thousands of Nigerians invaded the social media space on Thursday, condemning the roles allegedly played by some presidential aides in the controversial award for President Muhammadu Buhari by the Martin Luther King center a few days ago.

Pictures of the delegation from the centre, The King Center, presenting the award on behalf of the family of legendary American civil rights activist to Buhari at the Presidential villa, found their way into the media space hours after the visit.

Obviously uncomfortable with the development, The King Center tweeted on Wednesday, dissociating itself from the award.

The statement, released via @TheKingCenter, read, “The award given to President Buhari of Nigeria was not given by The King Center, at the request of The King Center or by the children of #MLK and CorettaScottKing.”

The development ignited a series of unfavourable comments from members of the public,…

Speaking on “Dynamics of managing a political party” at a retreat organised by the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Dogara gave a damning verdict on political parties in Africa and Nigeria in particular.

He said political parties in Africa, especially in Nigeria, are weak, lack internal democracies among other challenges. He noted that these challenges include the absence of organisational structures, lack of ideologies and manifestoes etc.

Wrong reasons to get married

Marriage is a big step in anyone’s life and it is not a decision that should be taken lightly.
Getting married means you are committing yourself totally to a relationship with one person for the rest of your life.
This is why I get angry when nosy, busy body Nigerians hound ladies to go and get married. Is marriage a ticket to heaven? Why should a person’s life and achievements be measured by their marital status?
These people pressure these ladies so much that they get married to men they are not compatible with. They get married to men who treat them badly just to get the Mrs. Title.
The annoying thing is that when trouble starts, these same people will start chanting ‘Pray for him to change’ like it’s going out of fashion. If his mother couldn’t change him for over three decades, how will his wife change him, is she a magician?
Men and women should know that getting married for the wrong reasons is like courting trouble. People should get married for the right…

W hen in 1996 in Switzerland, the then Nigerian queen of the track, Mary Onyali, set a new African 200 metres record with a time of 22.07seconds, not many would have thought it would take over two decades for the record to be erased.
However, last Saturday, Blessing Okagbare threw Onyali’s record into the dustbin as she started her outdoor season with an impressive 22.04s in her 200m race at the Wes Kittley Invitational Track and…
