Snake rearing, a profitable venture –Researcher

The officer in charge of Snakebite Treatment and Research Centre, Kaltungo in Gombe state, Dr. Abubakar Ballah, has encouraged members of the public to embrace the trade of rearing snakes to enhance their economic status.

Ballah told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kaltungo on Friday that snake rearing is one of the most profitable trades, considering the high cost of snake venom which pharmaceutical industries use in producing anti snake venom.

“An ounce of the venom of a carpet viper snake is $500, that of cobra and puff adder snakes cost $400, and the good thing about the business is that you can find market easily through the Internet,” he said.

He said that apart from the production of anti snakebite venoms, the pharmaceutical industries use the snake venoms in the production of anti hypertensive, cancer and ulcer drugs.

He said that apart from selling the snakes to pharmaceutical firms, the reptiles could be sold to earn foreign exchange.

INEC releases 2019 general elections notice in Lagos

As part of its preparations for the 2019 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos State on Friday published the notice of elections at its state office, INEC Local Government offices, and state Registration Areas.

INEC gave this directive in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Mr. Femi Akinbiyi.

“The action is in accordance with the approved deadline for the conduct of the 2019 general elections, as contained in Section 30 of the Electoral Act,’’ Akinbiyi said.

The Electoral Act states that: “The Commission shall, not later than 90 days before the day appointed for holding of an election under this Act, publish a notice in each state of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.”

Akinbiyi explained that the Act requested the commission to state the date of the election and appoint the place at which nomination papers are to be delivered.
